The high school curriculum will further broaden the students’ knowledge base while continuing to emphasize character development. Students will become well prepared for college entrance exams such as the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Chatrwittaya School graduates will expect to gain admission into their choice of universities in Thailand or abroad.
English, French and Chinese Languages
English in the senior school is essentially about communication and analysis. It is an experiential journey involving reading, writing and ‘risktaking’. Students are encouraged to take ‘calculated risks’ in their writing because “We learn new things when we try new things.” In writing students will learn all the important conventions including grammar and correct usage. They will learn to write both formally and informally and to reflect, in the form of a journal, on what they (or others) have written. They will also discover that English is not a collection of separate components but a “living, breathing” subject that is constantly evolving. The English Curriculum at levels G10,11 & 12 is set in 3 sections – Writing and Grammar, Reading Comprehension, and Drama.
Writing & Grammar - Students will develop their language skills through study and practice of stylistic elements and mechanics of grammar.
The total writing process will be covered stressing the pre-writing and revision components of the process. Students use the writing process to produce descriptions, characterizations and biological sketches, and persuasive essays.
Reading & Comprehension - Students will read a variety of literary forms form books (classic, fiction, non-fiction, informative), magazines and newspaper. Some writing in this class will be drawn rom the student’s experiences or as a reaction to a reading material. Furthermore, the students will participate in a range of activities designed to enhance speed reading skills (scanning, skimming and comprehension skills). Some of these reading materials include excerpts from Greek Mythology and Shakespeare’s plays.
Drama - This full year course is designed to assist students in gaining self-confidence and poise while speaking before others. The course, also, provides a study of the elements of drama and its brief history. Towards the end of the year, emphasis will be placed on the analytical study of the works of William Shakespeare discovering the elements of a comedy or a tragedy. The class puts up two one-act plays : one for each semester and performs on stage in front of the school population, the parents and the teachers.
French and Chinese.
This subject enables the development of basic French speaking skills. By the end of the course, the students are expected to be equipped with enough vocabulary and phrasal expressions to be able to carry a conversation in French with a native French speaker, in their daily lives. An additional option is an equivalent course in Chinese.
Mathematics Grades 10,11,12
This course reviews the basics of algebra, geometry, functions and trigonometry. When a sound formation is already developed and the students fully understand the logic involved in the number system, more mathematical techniques are introduced and more effetive practice is designed with a grade A level in IGCSE as the target. Intorduction to Calculus prepares our students for the tertiary academic level.
Global Studies Grades 10,11,12
This subject enables the students to develop their research, interpretive and reporting skills. They find useful information about different countries, reports to the class (individually or as working groups), and interpret some of the technical terms they have learned. The focus is on International Relations and global concerns. BY the end of the year, the students would have understood their world as it was then, and our world as it is now.
Science Grades 10,11,12
In High School, the students start the year with AP Biology. They develop an understanding of biological systems. With suitable scientific ability, the students develop an interest in the living world.
In AP Chemistry, practical experiences and intellectual arguments take the students into the fascinating and sometimes perplexing world of prediction and explanation of the properties of matter. The students are prepared for a career in applied sciences such as geology and engineering.
In AP Physics the students learn to understand how the world around us works. Answers to some important questions such as energy demand, the environment and nuclear power will be answered based on Physical Laws applied from the smallest sub-atomic particles to the largest objects imaginable.
Information Technology
At Chatrwittaya School, the Information Technology department ensures all students become proficient in and up to date with modern day computing practices. Real life applications and practices are a priority for students, who will master a wide range of computer-related skills.
I.T is focused on 4 main areas – Software, Hardware, Design, and Marketing. Students are measured constantly, with ever more intensive applications according to individual aptitude, in some cases up to and beyond degree level. Students will be able to fix PC problems, type proficiently, create graphics and logos, build a website, promote it, and be up to date with all things IT and internet related. Information Technology draws on other skills learned in Maths, English, Science, Media studies and general research.
In Software, a layered approach is taken, with students introduced to the basic productivity programs, such as MS Word, to increase their typing and word-procesing and skills, MS Paint, for basic graphics, and Excel for functions and equations. These applications progress to advanced word functions, and macros and mathematical formulae. Students are also shown basic security, such as firewall and anti-virus programs, and other types of application they may find useful at home and at work.
In Hardware, Students learn what goes on inside a computer, and how to fix something if it goes wrong. They practice installation of new components, upgrading and servicing existing components, driver installation and configuration, trouble-shooting, and other related studies. This enables students to be able to build, upgrade, diagnose and fx problems with virtually any PC at an early age.
In Design, students are introduced to more advanced applications, to further their creative skillsets. Photoshop and Illustrator are commonly used applications which are put to use in projects, along with Dreamweaver and other applications which enable each student to design and create their own website and put it on the internet. Video production and editing is also introduced along with a wide range of other design and production techniques.
In Marketing, students are introduced to the concept of search engines and how they work, how to make a website better noticed on the internet and study the various techniques employed to promote people, sites and ideas online, including social networking applications and other online media.
Economics
In the High School, the study of Economics is not purely theoretical. It is used to understand many real world problems, such as international trade and development. An in-depth look into markets and market failiures is the main focus in Microeconomics (G10). The G11 students take a broader look through Macroeconomics which studies the national economy of Thailand.
The G12 students take a deeper look into International Economics by concentrating on the reasons for trade, the Free Trade Agreements, the World Trade Organisation, and learn to analyse internationalism and develop some strategies through critical thinking methods.
